Lilliana’s story: Why Can’t they Just Take Better Care of Themselves?

Lilliana’s story is one often heard by women experiencing poverty and lack of health care access. Lilianna found herself pregnant and lacking access to early and high-quality maternal care. Her life was profoundly changed when doctors told her the loss of her child could have been prevented had she accessed early maternal care. Many women, especially poor women, find themselves without access to health care as a consequence of a health care system that places profit over people.
